Finding Your Life Purpose: The Journey to Your Best Self
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
— Howard Thurman
"Lost in life? Good. That means you’re about to find something extraordinary."
You’ve probably heard the phrase “find your purpose” more times than you can count. But let’s face it—what does that even mean? Is it a career? A calling? A big, booming voice declaring your destiny? (Spoiler alert: It’s not.)
Your life purpose isn’t a neon sign flashing “THIS WAY.” It’s more like a whisper, nudging you in a certain direction. It’s subtle, personal, and most importantly, discoverable—if you know where to look.
The Big Question: Why Are You Here?
When I ask clients why they want to find their purpose, their answers often revolve around these:
Fulfillment: A sense that life is about more than just “getting by.”
Clarity: Knowing where to focus their energy and talents.
Impact: The desire to leave a mark, no matter how small.
Here’s the secret: Finding your life purpose doesn’t mean rewriting your entire existence overnight. It’s about identifying what already brings you joy and aligning your actions with that joy.
Practical Steps to Discover Your Purpose
1. What Sets Your Soul on Fire?
Think back to a moment when you felt truly alive. Was it while helping someone, creating something, or solving a complex problem? That feeling isn’t random—it’s a clue.
Activity: Write down five moments when you felt unstoppable. Look for patterns. They’re breadcrumbs leading to your purpose.
2. What Would You Do for Free?
If money weren’t an issue, what would you spend your days doing? Teaching? Writing? Building? Often, the things we’d do for free are connected to our true purpose.
3. Ask Yourself Better Questions
Instead of “What’s my purpose?” try:
What breaks my heart, and how can I fix it?
What can I do that feels meaningful?
How can I serve others while staying true to myself?
4. Experiment Without Fear
Your purpose isn’t always a grand revelation; it’s often found through trial and error. Say yes to new opportunities, even if they scare you. Each experience will sharpen your understanding of what you want—and don’t want.
5. Silence the Noise
In a world full of distractions, purpose requires quiet reflection. Schedule time each week to disconnect—whether through meditation, journaling, or a long walk.
A Personal Story
I once worked with a client who believed her purpose was tied to her 9-to-5 job. But deep down, she felt unfulfilled. Through coaching, she uncovered her true passion: mentoring teens. It wasn’t her job title that defined her purpose; it was the impact she wanted to make. Today, she combines her corporate skills with her passion by running a mentorship program on weekends.
The Purpose Myth
Here’s a truth no one tells you: Your purpose isn’t fixed. It evolves as you do. What matters is embracing the journey, not waiting for a perfect moment of clarity.
